What Is Immediate Care?

Immediate care is a service for people who need quick medical help but don’t have a life-threatening emergency. Immediate Care is a good option for when you can’t wait to see your regular doctor.

Immediate Care Services in Aurora, IL

VNA’s Weston Avenue location is the only VNA clinic where you can get the following Immediate Care services:

  • Suturing: stitches for minor cuts and scrapes, including wounds that may be deep but with bleeding under control.
  • Radiology: X-rays of the bones and chest, for a possible broken bone and for certain chest-related symptoms (such as extended fever, extended cough, wheezing, or minor chest trauma).
  • Soft casting: e.g., for a wrist or ankle injury
  • Foreign body removal
  • Care for minor corneal abrasions and burns

For all other acute needs, patients can be seen at any VNA location (with or without an appointment).

When to Go to Immediate Care

You should go to Immediate Care if you need help with common but minor injuries and illnesses. For example:

  • A cold or cough
  • A fever or sore throat
  • Minor cuts or scrapes
  • Sprains or strains
  • Small burns
  • Bug bites or rashes

VNA staff will direct you to our Immediate Care at Weston Avenue if your situation is urgent but minor. If your symptoms or injuries are severe, staff will direct you to the emergency room.

When to Go to the Emergency Room Instead of Immediate Care

Patients experiencing a medical emergency should call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. You should go to the emergency room if:

  • You have trouble breathing
  • You’re bleeding a lot
  • You have chest pain or heart trouble
  • You’re seriously hurt in an accident
  • You have severe pain
  • You experienced a seizure
  • You have sudden weakness or numbness in your body
  • You fainted or lost consciousness
  • You have a high fever (105 degrees or more)
  • You can’t keep fluids down (vomiting) or have nonstop diarrhea
  • You hit your head, and lost consciousness, had a seizure, or started vomiting (even if it happens a few hours afterwards)
  • You have burns that are larger than 2 or 3 inches, go all the way around an area like the wrist, or causes numbness
  • You have a broken bone that looks visibly twisted or out of place, or if you can see bone/muscle

After your emergency has been treated at the hospital, you can come to VNA for your follow-up treatment.

In some cases, VNA staff can provide initial treatment (like x-rays for broken bones) but will direct you to the hospital if the situation requires more advanced care.
