Outpatient Treatment for OUD in Aurora, IL & Nearby Suburbs

Opioid use disorder (OUD) affects individuals, families, and communities across the country, including the communities served by VNA Health Care. We support patients struggling with opioid use with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). This proven approach combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral health support to treat OUD. By integrating MAT within our broader care model we ensure patients receive coordinated medical, behavioral health, and supportive services that address the whole person.

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction in Aurora, IL

Medication-Assisted Treatment is considered the gold standard of care for opioid use disorder. MAT uses medications such as buprenorphine or naltrexone, combined with counseling and behavioral therapies, to support individuals in recovery.

These medications work by:

  • Reducing cravings for opioids
  • Easing withdrawal symptoms
  • Helping stabilize brain chemistry affected by opioid use
  • Lowering the risk of relapse and overdose

When paired with counseling and behavioral health services, MAT provides patients with the tools and stability needed to focus on recovery and rebuild their lives. Frequency of visits and treatment length is determined by the needs of the patient.

MAT Services are currently available at our Highland Avenue center in Aurora, IL.

Why Choose Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Addiction?

Extensive research has shown that MAT improves treatment retention, decreases illicit opioid use, reduces overdose risk, and improves overall health outcomes. For many patients, MAT provides the stability needed to pursue employment, strengthen family relationships, and improve their physical and mental health.

Mental & Behavioral Health Services for OUD
Patients participating in MAT for OUD may receive a range of mental & behavioral health services as part of their treatment plan. Together, these services help address the behavioral, emotional, and social aspects of substance use disorder, reinforcing the effectiveness of medication-based treatment and supporting long-term recovery. Mental & Behavioral Health Services are available at key VNA locations in Aurora, IL as well as through telehealth appointments.
Individual Counseling
Patients may meet regularly with licensed counselors or therapists to discuss substance use patterns, identify triggers, build coping skills, and develop relapse prevention strategies.
Psychiatric Evaluation and Medication Management
Some patients experience co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. Psychiatric providers can evaluate these conditions and prescribe medications when appropriate to support overall mental health stability.
Substance Use Disorder Counseling
Specialized counseling can help patients better understand addiction, develop recovery goals, and build resilience during the recovery process.
Case Management and Care Coordination
Care coordinators assist patients with navigating treatment plans, connecting with community resources, and addressing barriers such as housing instability, financial stress, or transportation challenges.
FAQs about our Outpatient Opioid Addiction Treatment Program

Yes, VNA Health Care offers a Family & Friends Support Group for those with a loved one struggling with opioid use (or other substance use). Substance use disorder affects not only the individual in treatment but also the people who care about them.

Our support group helps you understand addiction and the steps to recovery. We also focus on your own self-care and personal wellness. The group is a safe, comfortable place to share your experiences. Here, you can build a support system with people who know exactly what you are going through.

This free support group, led by a VNA social worker, is open to any family member or friend who has been affected by a loved one’s addiction or substance use disorder related to alcohol, drugs, or opioids.

The support group is offered both online and in person at VNA Health Care – Aurora (323 Weston Avenue), making it accessible to individuals across the community. Dates and times vary, and staff and community members can visit the VNA calendar for upcoming sessions.

Providing support to families and friends helps strengthen the overall recovery process and reinforces the network of care surrounding individuals receiving treatment.

Currently, VNA Healthcare offers Medication-Assisted Treatment for OUD with buprenorphine or naltrexone. Both medications are FDA-approved to treat OUD. If you have questions or want more information about medications for OUD, reach out to our team to schedule an appointment with a licensed provider.

Buprenorphine and naltrexone are different. Neither is better than the other. The right fit depends on your medical history, needs and goals.

Buprenorphine is one of few opioid medications that can be used to treat OUD. It reduces withdrawal symptoms and cravings. If a patient needs or prefers a treatment that is completely opioid-free, naltrexone is the preferred option. This medication blocks the euphoric effects of opioids. Naltrexone is prescribed after a patient has completed detoxification from opioids. This includes buprenorphine.

Inpatient detoxification and residential treatment programs are not offered directly through VNA Health Care.

Some patients may require a higher level of care at the beginning of treatment or during periods of relapse. In these situations, VNA providers and care teams work closely with patients to coordinate referrals to trusted external inpatient treatment programs in the community.

These referrals may include medical detoxification services, residential or inpatient rehabilitation programs  and intensive inpatient behavioral health treatment.

Care coordinators and behavioral health staff assist patients with identifying appropriate programs and navigating the referral process. After completing inpatient treatment, many patients transition back to VNA for ongoing MAT, primary care, and behavioral health support, helping ensure continuity of care throughout the recovery process.
